This is WEIRDD: January 2017

Mallory: This has been the month of crewneck sweatshirts for me. I got multiple for Christmas, and they are just so comfy and warm. I also feel like you can dress them up or down so they have been my go to fashion piece of the month.

Abby: Turtlenecks are back my friends and don’t let anyone tell you any differently. I have been wearing my new green and purple turtlenecks maybe a little too often but I DON’T CARE. They keep my neck warm and add definition to my chin.

Mallory: Back to school means back to Brough. Which they rearranged. I was VERY disoriented when I walked back in after the break. I had to search for the unhealthy meal instead of it being right in front of me. Ugh. Who’s idea was it to try and make me eat healthier???

Abby: Ok I have now done three weeks off meal prep so I am really proud. The first week was an Asian Inspired Spiral-ized Cucumber Salad and roasted veggies with quinoa. The second week I had a Roasted Winter Vegetable bowl and a Kale salad. This week I have Bok Choy Rice noodles and another kale salad because lots of love for kale.

Impressed By

Mallory: Lady Gaga’s newest album Joanne. I know that I wrote about this in a Friday Five a couple weeks ago, but it is SO GOOD you guys. It’s incredibly personal, and you can tell that she has put her heart and soul into writing and singing the songs. It is very different than anything she has put out before and I am 100% here for it.

Abby: KAT CAMPBELL. She has been really smart about maintaining healthy eating choices and going to her 7am class which is a horrible thing that shouldn’t exist.

Mallory: I mentioned this in my Christmas haul from friends, but Jacob got me Uncommon Grounds by Mark Pendergrast for Christmas and that’s the book I read this month. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though it was honestly a deviation from what I typically read. It took me awhile to read because the history of coffee is very dense and drama-filled. This isn’t something I would recommend for those looking for a light read, but if you have time to spend reading and want to learn a little something you should pick it up and give it a try.

Abby: I recently read an article for class called, “How to Build a Man” by Anne-Fausto Sterling. It brought up very interesting insights into masculinity and the expectations of Western males.

Mallory: Foursome on AwesomenessTV’s YoutubeRED channel. I use my dad’s Youtube account for this, which takes work, which is how you know that this is something you should check out. I love JennxPenn’s actual Youtube channel and I am so glad that I finally got around to watching this show she stars in. The drama in the show is on purpose ridiculous to be funny and I really enjoy it. Lots of laughs occurred in the watching of this show.

Abby: The Good Place. What a TV show. What a season finale. So funny, so smart. Please just watch.

Mallory: School starting back up in the middle of January means that I have been trying to get back in the swing of things. I feel like I forgot how to balance school, work, TBS, and fun over the break – using my planner has helped me feel a little in control. I also started developing a good sleep pattern, which has really helped my sanity even though it means that no productive work gets done after 11 P.M. because that’s bedtime.

Abby: I’m back on the grind of studying, working, learning and generally scheduling my entire life. Additionally, I am a membership candidate for TBS which is super exciting but also a large time commitment. It will definetly be worth it though, so no worries there. Basically my calendar is my best friend right now and we hang out all the time.

Christmas Haul Part 4: Friends (and Myself)

From Me, to Me

I ran a twitter poll that told me I should buy myself earrings and a necklace. So, pictured above are the earrings that I chose to buy, from Ms. RabbitHole on Etsy. They are perfect for the everyday studs I was in the market for – I haven’t taken them off since they came in the mail. I feel like it is also my responsibility to let y’all know that since I have been wearing them all the time the gold on the earring has rubbed off and they are now silver. I still wear them, but I am honestly a little thrown off because they now don’t match any of my gold jewelry.  I also bought myself the choker from BaubleBar pictured below. It was on super sale because it was one of their Buried Baubles, which they refresh a couple days a week.

I also purchased myself a pair of leggings from Girlfriend Collective, while they were doing a giveaway of FREE leggings. I JUST HAD TO PAY SHIPPING! I don’t have a picture of them on me, but I wear them all the time. They are so comfy, and they don’t stretch throughout the day.

I found out that Zendaya has a clothing line, and when I looked at the clothes online I found this pair of pants that I just had to have. So I bought them. Maybe it was unwise, but LOOK AT THEM. I am in love.

From Jacob Maestri

Jacob gave most of his close friends books that were tailored to each of our personalities, so we all got together on Dead Day, dressed up in fancy clothes, and ate breakfast foods for dinner before we opened our books. He gave me this book called Uncommon Grounds by Mark Pendergast that I have started to read AND IT IS SO GOOD. It’s also a really good Christmas break read because it is so large. I can’t wait to finish it.

From Abby Patty

Abby bought me gifts from a wish list that were things I really needed/wanted. I got a beauty blender, an eyeshadow brush set, and a new earring to put in my tragus piercing. The beauty blender works so well. The earring is SO CUTE and I love the way it works without having a back I have to deal with.

From Kat Campbell

Fun fact: I am allergic to microwave popcorn so I struggle finding ways to eat popcorn with my friends. To solve the problem, Kat bought me an air-popper to keep at her and Abby’s house for our numerous movie nights. I love this so much and honestly it might be one of the most thoughtful gifts I’ve ever received. Kat has 10/10 gift giving skills.

P.S. This was written at a lot of different time over the past two months so it is a little sporadic. I am sorry for the VERY late post but it is here!!!! YAY!!!!

The Friday Five

  1. The biggest mistake I’ve made in the last week would definitely be getting coffee before chapter at 8 PM last night. I need someone to never let me do that again. I try to pretend caffeine doesn’t have an effect on me, but seeing as it took me hours to fall asleep last night I think I need to give up that facade. Right now I’m saying “never again” but I am a college student, so let’s see how long that lasts amiright ladies??
  2. I bought a textbook from the University of Arkansas bookstore online a week ago and received an order confirmation email that day. But instead of there being a charge on my account, there was a transaction of $0.00 from them instead. And now there is nothing at all. I still don’t have the book I need. Which means I should probably call someone or go in to ask about it, but I don’t want to be an adult.
  3. Past me thought that having a two hour plus break between every class was a great idea. Or she didn’t really think about how awful that would be. Either way, every day of this semester has felt like it has lasted for 7 years. I honestly don’t know what to do with myself between classes. I guess I can use that time to study or do homework, but it feels weird guys. My brain is CONFUSED about my schedule right now.
  4. So TBS has a brother fraternity called Kappa Kappa Psi, and each MC of the organizations gets a big brother and a big sister. Last year, I became my big brother’s first ever and only little – but now she (both of our organizations are co-ed) has three more!!!! Through this, I am realizing that I am 100% needy and an attention hog and I don’t like sharing love. All things that are wholly personal problems that I need to work on. (In all seriousness, I love all of my co-littles and they deserve all the love Becca has to give them and I know there is enough of her to go around). And more importantly than Becca getting to share her abundant love, I got a heckin’ cool little brother!!
  5. Me to boy: hey wanna get free ice cream sometime Boy: sure sounds fun Me: cool, this weekend? Boy: yeah that’s awesome Boy: actually my cousin thinks you’re hot and wants to come with us Me: SCREAMS INTERNALLY FOREVER (this may be an oversimplification but also exactly how it happened okay)

The Friday Five

  1. It’s inauguration day. Instead of mourning, I’m trying to embrace the nice weather and the love surrounding me and red velvet pancakes from IHOP. I keep telling myself that it’s only four years. I can make it through four years. Maybe it will be four years in which people’s rights are taken away, but the citizens of this country are fighters. I have faith that the Democrats that remain senators and representatives will fight with all their might, and after these four years are up we can bring back the rights we lost during these four years.
  2. I feel like I have achieved something because I have gotten 8 hours of sleep all but one night this week. I have a steady wake-up time at 8 every morning because I have class at 9:30/9:40 every day. I am PUMPED because keeping a steady schedule is going to rock my socks.
  3. I’ve been back in Fayetteville for about a week now and it feels so good to be here. I missed all of my friends so darn much and I’ve gotten to hang out with everybody this past week. Getting back into going to class and stuff has been a little tricky, but I am managing. (I also just realized I’ve somehow gone this entire week without a trip to Whataburger – this needs to be remedied ASAP).
  4. Lady Gaga’s newest album Joanne is a gem. I have been jamming to all of the bops on it lately and I couldn’t be happier. Gaga is back and better than ever.
  5. I HAVE A LITTLE!!!! Her name is Maureen, and she is gorgeous and amazing and super awesome. I’ve known for over a month that she was my little, but we had our Big/Little Reveal last night so I finally got to tell her. I also gained a co-little, which I’m very excited about but also – I have to share Kelly’s attention??? Devastated. I am so excited to be a big and to love on Maureen. I feel like I’ve gained a partner in crime which is so exciting.

The Friday Five

  1. I have recently noticed that I am old, and that time passes pretty quickly. It’s really hard for me to believe that I am 20. But what’s even harder for me to grasp is how old my little brother is. Conner is a freshman (!) in high school. He’s been working on growing his hair out for a little over a year now and it looks really good. He is old enough to start doing driver’s ed. He’s also matured enough to wear something other than nike shorts and t-shirts everyday. I’m not sure if this makes any sense, but I have realized how old I am through how old he is – Conner being 15, when my entire life I’ve though of him as a kid makes me feel OLD. (And I’m only 20).
  2. My guilty pleasure is The Bachelor (and Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise). I can watch that reality tv show like nobody’s business. One of my favorite things about the show is watching the friendships between the “contestants” form. Those are long-lasting relationships! Through the show, I have also realized that I always root for the underdog. For example, Tanner Tolbert was my favorite on Bachelorette Kaitlyn’s season. I knew there was no way he was winning because it just wasn’t there between them – but he was the best choice in my opinion.
  3. I am heading back to Fayetteville tomorrow (finally). One of the things that always happen when I leave New Boston and my parent’s house is that I leave at least 3 of my belongings behind. Random clothing items, toiletries, pillow – it’s all happened. I haven’t even started to pack to head back and I DON’T KNOW HOW I WILL BE ABLE TO FIT IT IN MY BAGS. Not only do I have to bring back all of the stuff I came here with, I have to make sure all of my Christmas gifts and the things I ordered and bought for myself make it back. Plus I have my friends Christmas gifts wrapped, which makes travel harder. I’m honestly putting it all off because I know it’s going to suck.
  4. UNPOPULAR OPINION. I don’t want to own a dog or cat or pet in my adult life. It’s not that I don’t think that animals are super cool and fun. It is just that pets are a huge hassle!! They also smell. They leave pet hair everywhere. I honestly have no desire to put myself through an extra hassle like that. Plus they can be very annoying when they bark or whine or howl while you are trying to sleep.
  5. Texas weather is 100% crazy. Last Friday it snowed. And then 4 days later it was 70 degrees outside. I just honestly don’t understand it. I also find it very annoying when packing to come home because I have no clue what the weather will surprise me with while I am here. This leads to overpacking and then hating myself when I have to overpack to head back. Weather just causes a whole lot of problems for me.

Christmas Haul Part 3: Dad’s Family

On December 23rd, my family, my dad’s two sisters and their families, and my grandpa and grandpa gathered together to celebrate Christmas and my dad’s birthday (which is actually on the 24th). We ate creamy tacos and queso, had some pretty awesome fellowship, and opened presents. We also sang happy birthday to my dad before cutting into some cheesecake (I don’t get it, but cheesecake is his favorite dessert). On the 24th, we went to the Christmas Eve service at my church (Tapp UMC) at 3:00 PM and then to my great-aunt Paula’s to eat dinner with my extended family on that side. Us “teenagers” (some of us are actually 20/21) got to do a Chinese Christmas gift exchange, and I ended up with an iTunes gift card (which basically means my Apple Music subscription will be free the next two months).

From My Aunt Chris (and her husband and kids)

This very nice Arkansas sweatshirt from the campus bookstore that I am in LUUUUV with!!!! (I picked it out with my mom for my aunt so like I knew what I was getting but I’m still excited fam). I also have worn it at least three times a week since Christmas so it was a GOOD GIFT.

From My Aunt B and Kristel (and their daughter)

An Amazon gift card shaped like a bookmark. Y’all, this is pretty lit because I have been into reading actual books instead of Kindle books – and now I have a way to buy them AND MARK MY PLACE! I think I will end up buying Almost Adulting by Arden Rose and Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham, along with whatever my twitter poll decides.

From My Nana and PawPaw

This is basically a haul of various clothes from American Eagle but DEAL WITH IT – I like their clothes OKAY.

These pajama pants that are silky, high waisted, wide legged, and HAVE POCKETS. Also very cute. They are very soft and honestly I’ve considered trying to style them into an actual outfit multiple times – this probably won’t ever happen BUT IT COULD.

I love this blouse shirt thing with bell sleeves and a pattern – but like is it cute? Or ugly? Is it ugly/cute? Who actually cares? NOT ME!!! I am really into the bell sleeves, plus this is very comfortable and cute. It also gives you options of how much cleavage you actually want to show – this is nice because it makes the top ~versatile~ for different occasions.

JEANS. Cause who can have too many pairs of jeans? No one, that’s who. These ones are a darker wash, high waisted, and very comfortable.

Two pairs of leggings! Because every single pair of leggings that I owned before Christmas had a hole in the butt or crotch or elsewhere because that happened. The black ones are a replacement from the time I jumped a fence and ripped a giant hole in my favorite pair – they are high-waisted, black, comfortable, and a very basic pair of leggings like every girl should own. The gray ones are fleece lined! I really like the logo band thing at the top and how high these come up on my waist.

This white mock-neck sweater – very cute, very warm. I’m into it. This can be dressed up or down, and is a very nice basic piece.

Two more bralettes from Aerie because I don’t wear a real bra anymore. Who would, after putting one of these on??? They are so terribly comfortable. The black one is a halter one, and the blue-y/purple-y one has a criss-cross back. The color is also GORGEOUS.

This super cute long sleeved t-shirt. All of American Eagle clothing is so soft, I honestly can’t take it. This has a mock-neck top, with a little keyhole. The material is subtly striped, which I honestly wasn’t really expecting but am excited about.

P.S. – I know that these pictures don’t really give the clothing justice but I don’t have a better way to show them!! It took me a little bit to figure out how to photograph the shirts, and it still is pretty subpar. I promise to try better in the future.

The Friday Five

Or “A list of alternate captions for the Instagram picture I posted yesterday of my with my brand new driver’s license.”

  1. “TBH I thought I would be able to drink legally before I was able to drive legally” – because I turn 21 in August and no one really thought I would ever get this license. Also because it’s funny.
  2. “One time I won an award in high school for “Most Likely to NOT Have a Driver’s License Before She Graduates College.” Jokes on y’all suckas.” Because I did win that award and it has now turned out to be inaccurate – I’m not close to graduating college yet.
  3. “FINALLY” – because no one in my life believed I would ever have a driver’s license. To be quite honest, I doubted it too. I tried to take the test multiple times, but then it got cancelled. Every. Single. Time. Also because no one believes I can actually drive.
  4. “Only took four years” – because I am 20. And almost everyone I know got their licenses at 16. I didn’t even get a permit guys. This has been a LONG TIME COMING.
  5. “Guess it’s time to start repaying my friends for 4 years worth of rides” – I used a variation of this on twitter, but it is very accurate. The people who drove me around in high school, and since I’ve moved to Fayetteville deserve a huge shoutout. I am so grateful that they liked me enough to hang out with me and always drive when we hung out. There were years when all my friends would meet outside of my house and leave their cars there so that we could all ride together. Since I’ve moved, I owe a huge thank you to the people that let me ride home to New Boston with them (and back to school). And to the people that drove me to late night food from Hotz during freshman year. A special shoutout to Abby and Kat who are always picking me up, to take me to their house and then driving me back to campus. I am eternally grateful to all of these people. So if you’re reading this, thanks so much you guys.

New Year’s Resolutions

  1. Read at least 1 book a month for fun. I love to read, so reading for class isn’t awful – but I still feel like last year my reading for pleasure fell off. I’m hoping to keep myself accountable with the monthly WEIRRD posts, but also by writing in my planner. I got a lot of books for Christmas, so as long as they last I should be able to keep this resolution.
  2. Take better care of my skin. I have honestly never really had any trouble with keeping my skin clear, but I still feel like I should take better care of it. I want to get a good moisturizer to use in the morning and at night and I want to make sure that I take off my makeup each night. Sometimes I get really lazy and decide I’ll be fine with leaving it on, but that’s a lie and we all know it.
  3. Write for this blog more. I want to consistently put out The Friday Five, but also write more posts on my lifestyle and thoughts. I feel like I don’t express my opinions and feelings and creative-ness enough – and sharing this blog with Abby is a great creative outlet and place to do that.
  4. Be a better member of Tau Beta Sigma. Part of this will be doing more than just meeting the membership requirements. I want to be there for my sisters (& brothers) more. I also want to make sure that I’m the best big to both of my little I can be. I’m really excited to have a little, but I need to make sure that the excitement doesn’t wear off and that I always be there for them and cultivate a good relationship.
  5. Spend more time on school work. This finals week, I spent a lot of time in the library studying – with really good results. I want to put out that same amount of effort and try to stay ahead so that the weeks where my tests and papers are all piled together aren’t THAT overwhelming. I’ve been making really good use of my Passion Planner so far this school year, but I can definetley do more with it by planning times to study and start working on assignments ahead of time.

Christmas Haul Part 2: Mom’s Family

On Christmas Day, my family went to church and then had Christmas lunch at IHOP before heading to Camden, AR for festivities with my mom’s parents and siblings the next day. We spent the night at my grandparents house, along with my two younger cousins and one of my mom’s older sisters. Those of us in the house ate chicken spaghetti and helped prepare for the celebration the next day. I baked cookies and helped to clean up. On the 26th, my mom’s brother and other sister joined us, along with my two older cousins and their husbands. We ate a big lunch, and after the kitchen was clean the younger kids (this still includes me) opened presents. The adults all participated in a Chinese Christmas gift exchange.

From Aunt Mel

She gave all of the girls a Vera Bradley makeup bag, and mine looks like this! I haven’t transferred my makeup into it yet, but I can’t wait to get that done. This makeup bag is so roomy, and there are even little mesh pockets on the inside. I’m really excited to use this.

From Uncle Kyle and Aunt Betty

We all got small wristlet wallets from Fossil! Like with the makeup bag, I haven’t transferred anything over yet but I really need to get around to that. The wallet I am currently using is one that I have been using for a year, so it has gotten a little dingy from wear and tear. Like very dingy. Like there are place on it that are supposed to be white, but now have turned a light brown. So this gift will find some very good use.

From Lanie and David

These necklace can be layered together or worn individually. They have a really cool latch that allows them to hook together if you want to wear them that way. I also don’t really have any colored jewelry like this so these might come in handy.

From Gram and Pop

All of the grandkids got $25 Walmart gift cards. Mine has this super cute dog on it. I honestly haven’t decided what I will end up buying with this yet, but it should come in handy next time I’m in Walmart. I’m a broke college kid, so gift cards are ALWAYS welcome.
